Diamond Platnumz's "Mdogo Mdogo"

Mdogo Mdogo is surrounded with very good singing, a sort of Bongo Ballad, and dancing. And that's the trouble, but first things first. Shirtless Troubadour -- he's villager, too -- at ease with his flute and bicycle beside a pristine waterfall, is the first image that we have in this video.

Click to watch the video

He's at ease with his whole self, in fact. But that's before improbable Mdogo Mdogo, in flowing lily white dress, 'discovers' him -- and then (supposedly) he, her. The rendezvous overlooks the palace in which the sometime-Sleeping Beauty lives.

O
ne suspects, though, that he -- predator of sorts to boot (and soon to boo) -- already knew her haunts, and knew she was soon coming. But why play the all-knowing role? Still, he's never seen 'suchlike' (Sachalike). This seemingly simple lore is many-sided.

T
his land, this settlement, belongs to a white-settler type living the big life -- with all the pretensions of a king's -- deep inside Africa. Or perhaps the kingship is a myth that has 'built itself', from all sides, around his settlement. Yet Troubadour, 'loser' or not, wants a part of it. He's the soft power type. The princess, too, has ambitions -- of finding love in this same Africa that's so distant even from right here.

What the King-Father doesn't realize is that loser's real talent -- his real magic -- is in his voice, and his dance moves. In the end, Father capitulates to Daughter's wishes, who has capitulated (no, 'won' sly Troubadour's heart) as well. It's a double-win for her, alright? And all's well with everyone. Sumptuous music, then
.

R
EAD: Mdogo Mdogo Lyrics

Shekhinah's 'Suited' Love

Suited is a song of deepest commitment, earnestly sung by this iconic but still mysterious South African singer, Shekhinah. "Suited for each other", she declares to her lover, though she fears they may be just a little too young still.

Click to watch the video

Her singing is polished, and it is accomplished. But in Suited one also detects a 'haunted' voice, projected hauntingly, in this world that's still full of dreams and innocence -- but that's already fodder for the singer's awakening combativeness.

That is, the singing character, personified by Shekhinah, is troubled by doubt -- about such surprises as life may have in hidden store: like yanking her lover away with no notice. Her song, her ballad, is a story -- about a relationship. And so that would be a tragedy of all tragedies.

But the video, what with a super-sensitive artist's eye for angle and visual impression, is also about performance and hanging out with friends. Taking selfies. Swaying to group-sing. People privately pivoting, in all that mix, to the loves of their individual lives.

One may want to get away from some of all this, but no one wants to be too far. Certainly not the singer, fronted by the only Shekhinah we know in this story. "What a love..."

Nana Fofie Showcases Her Vocal Gifts in Bebe

Bebe has an alluring beat, which brands the whole song. It grabs you (the whole of you) right away, with its moderate pace. It doesn't let go. We have high-def optics here, too. Just as well: this is an all-girl party -- of redemption, and else -- at a secluded fun-place.

Click to watch the video

Shame about the first 25 seconds, though, which the guy whose "body is full of liquor" makes us lose, needlessly. She shuts him out in the end, in any case.

N
ana Fofie is one talented songstress, for sure. She has fine vocal assets, which she modulates, and so showcases, with refined and ear-catching ease here. She's on top of her game here. Great is the effect.

The band which supports her is equal in all ways to the task at hand. It is well-attuned to all the aural requirements of this performance -- and more, even. What we are treated to here, then, is a symphony of sensibilities. Great is the ambience, too, all around.

Do Me Good by ExQ ft. Lulu Diva

Do Me Good might sound like a boisterous coming together of yin and yang. But that's only partly true. The noise is from the one, perhaps more inclined to interior monologues, from the far interior. The other's more measured, with a coastal mien and inclination toward nuances.

Click to watch the video

The whole act is an imaginary expression -- on the one hand rough-edged and on the other smooth and finely tended -- probabilities of sub-Saharan attraction.

The two singers, from Zimbabwe and Tanzania, give it their all. The optics are crisp, with just about one frill. And we have a great tune, in which to wrap up the whole do.

Green Light for Cuppy and Tekno

Cuppy and Tekno, ppl of the same ilk! They have the Green Light to Pom! Pom! To have a gooood and unforgettable time. We got it too -- listening, watching with measured nods.

All the laid-back beats to sway to be beating, we be swaying. All the cool vibes to soak all in -- we be soaking! All of that's what this moment is about. It's what it is!

Click to watch the video

The beat goes on and on! On and on. "Hold! Tease! Please!" We be synchronous! Cool cats, dancing. Sexy Cuppy in measured tones. Dancing to a fini we'd rather postpone. You can't dance like that and not be happy, in the moment. Great phun. Pom! Pom!

Top 25 Happiest Songs By or Featuring African Queens in 2017 ~ #TheYamboSelection

Introduction and Selection Criteria for Africa's Top Songs of 2017

After the belated publication of Africa's Top Songs for each of the years running from 2010 to 2013, the 2017 list now represents the eighth annual ranking in #TheYamboSelection series. The same criteria have been used this year (January to December 2017) as were used last year to select and rank the best pop songs out of those released or published during the year. The longest list of top songs had 25 titles in 2014, but this number has been set at 40 since 2015.

Before the entire Top 40 list is released, smaller "vertical" segments are released as follows: Top 5, Top 10, Top 20 and Top 25 (where we can't go from 20 straight to 40, for one reason or another). This is intended to facilitate subsequent online search by individuals who may be interested only in specific segments...READ MORE

East Africa's Top 20 Pop Songs of 2013 ~ #TheYamboSelection

INTRODUCTORY REMARKS:

You will recall that the first list of Africa's Top Pop Songs in #TheYamboSelection series covered calendar year 2014. The second list covered 2015. However, while working on the various 2016 lists, interest continued to grow concerning how songs produced in the years just prior to 2014 stacked up.

This interest has now resulted in the 2013 list. The retrospective look, starting with 2013, will only go back to 2010. At most, only the Top 25 Pop Songs will be determined for each of those years.

The procedure for generating the 2013 list of Top 25 Pop Songs that you will find below derives from the one used for the period 2014-2016. Click here for all the essential details.

Radio + Weasel's Rendition of Magnetic Love

Someone, reacting to the powerful sounds and dance moves in Magnetic, said on Facebook as follows: "So love is so magnetic!!!" Magnetic, it so happens, was at number 2 on #TheYamboSelection list of East Africa's Top 25 Pop Songs of 2013.

This was my brief reply:  "It is, and Radio & Weasel do a fine interpretation of it all in song and truly artistic body texts".

P.S: I didn't ever get to say more about Magnetic, and the singers, as I had intended with some enthusiasm to do when I drafted and 'saved' the piece given above on February 23, 2017. Truth is, with the passage of time and the growing number of posts I was working on, related principally to #TheYamboSelection series, I even overlooked the fact that a draft already existed about Magnetic. I have 52 drafts and 1072 published posts even as we speak.

And so it has remained in that form since. In-between, I even published a piece titled Locknville and Radio+Weasel are "Done, Done, Done". But with the announcement, almost a year later, of Radio's tragic death earlier today (February 1st, 2018) -- which prompted my rather frantic search for whatever else I'd written about Radio+Weasel -- I stumbled upon the said draft. Without further ado, I've chosen to publish it today as is.

RIP Radio

Africa's 40 Happiest Songs Of The Year, 2017 ~ #TheYamboSelection

This is intended to facilitate subsequent online search by individuals who may be interested only in specific segments...

In "Let Me Know", Maleek Berry Sings to a Confounding Relationship

For the most part, the video of Let Me Know pays particular attention to the cheerfulness of the sole actress, who's the main focus of the song as well. It's not just her broad smiles that prompt cheer, but also her full range of playfulness -- her body texts.

Click to watch the video

A happy face and happy gestures transmit and engender happy thoughts all around -- certainly among those 'willing' to be moved. And there's lots of engendering here. But for the singer, it's what she really thinks about their relationship that really matters. Are they more than "just friends"?

He sings to her concerns as well, for sure, in this song with two parts. So he seeks to know in her own words what she, this mystifying lady, thinks. And likewise does she, more subtly, wish to know what's on his mind after a year together, in his own words.

"Make her know, make her know", the singer (un)surprisingly tells anyone with ears to hear. Can he show some dedication to keep this good thing going, then? They seem like a pair that can resolve issues. And so, Let Me Know.

Happiness shows its true face in various ways, is all.

MUSIC: KO-C's Optimistic Theme in Bollo c'est Bollo

Bollo c'est Bollo is a motivational song with a wonderful beat, and a rousing harmony of tunes. It's a call to 'action' for anyone who might feel let down or left behind in life's inexorable march through time and geography. It uplifts the spirit.

Click here to watch the video

The tone is, well, earnest -- and with some urgency to it. The song is sung in French and partly in English. We do have below a full translation of the lyrics into English. A write-up on the song, at this 237Showbiz site, should also help to discern the song's deeper meaning.

Any music, sans the lyrics, is never translated or even translatable, of course. Certainly, unless one wants to treat a critique of form as a form of processing implicit content into another kind of language -- a translation (better still, an interpretation), in short. Here, I'd rather simply talk about the music (the sounds in general) and interpret the lyrics.

Magasco's Bella

In Bella, Magasco (who was so impressive in Zamba) shows just how deep his vocal talent runs, and how pleasant it is -- even when the theme is not so 'Biblical'. Here, he pivots his singer's voice to a loving tone -- and to his one and only, his (proverbial) Bella.

Click to watch the video

His is a promise of constant love, which no self-respecting girl will take without a little salt-shake. And so, which Bella? "They know there is nothing there for two".

Still, all pop music is make-believe, and on the face of it -- of the relationships which its purveyors have in real life -- all too often promiscuous and promise-breaking. And yet, what a captivating song! So so sunny the vibes! So so sunny a day!

"Fresh (Remix)", a Jam Session by Fid Q, Diamond Platnumz and Rayvanny

A strummed guitar sets off this creatively imagined video. It keeps everyone hooked throughout this jamming affair by three of Tanzania's leading Bongo-Musikers. They'd rather rap through this particular engagement.

Click to watch the video

The beat strings together a sequence -- a montage -- of optics, urban sounds and conversational rap to offer a welcome break from the usual musical fare. Everyone sways along with it, waiting to shout out the designated word of the day: FRESH! And so it goes, and so the 'do' ends all too soon.

The Director has obviously worked hard to give us those intricately woven scenes in which everyone seems so effortless in doing whatever they're purposed to do.
