ARCHIVE: Toward a Theory of the Memetic Sphere

ABSTRACT:

Three basic objectives are pursued in this paper. One, to outline a theory of the memetic sphere. Some have called it the ideosphere, but none has dwelt upon the similitudes by means of which it reflects the celestial sphere, which in turn serves as its 'model'.

Two, to show that an expanding memetic sphere is in actuality the centrifugal afterglow of a now permanent information explosion, which in turn feeds on it. A theory of the memetic sphere is thus a theory of information explosion.

Three, to demonstrate that the way for individuals and groups to stay afloat  in an information cauldron, which human society has become, is to establish a computer-based network connectivity to transform 'Planet Earth' (otherwise a 'Wide Area') into a symbolic LAN (Local Area Network). This symbolism is, indeed, already ingrained in a popular catch-phrase in cyberspace, which says: "Think globally, act locally". A theory of information explosion consequently evolves into a theory of network connectivity...

Milestones in the Evolution of Mass Media, Up to the World Wide Web

Milestones in the Evolution of Mass Media, Up to the Wide World Web

                                      By Prof. Mauri Yambo

In 1999 I first put together, from various sources, a tabular chronology of milestones in the global evolution of mass media. The timeline covers a hugely long period, from c. 1,490,000 BC to the advent of the Internet (AD 1969) and the Wide World Web (AD 1990). In-between those temporal 'boundaries', many amazing things, many inventions, happened in the domain of human communication; sometimes, when we look back now, in slow-motion intervals, and often in relatively quick successions.

[Click on the heading above to see the chronology]

Consider this: Without the Internet, there would have been no World Wide Web. Without both, and without the telephone, there would be no Google or Facebook, no Twitter or YouTube. There would be no email or WhatsApp or Instagram or SMS. There would be no credit card and ATM, and no M-Pesa. There simply would be no life as we have come to know it here on earth.

New evidence, come upon since that 2003 tabulation, suggests that verbal communication, or speech -- made possible by a mutation in the FOXP2 gene, also known as the language gene -- in fact became possible nearly 1.25 million years later than suggested in the table. That's only 250,000 years or so ago!

Twitter Milestones, So Far

The people at Forbes have come up with interesting milestones in Twitter's short life, so far. The chronology and narrative are worth a read. Find it all here> click here.

Twitter, as you know, is a social networking site. Others prefer to see it as a microblogging gateway. I've seen tweets in which people declare Twitter a haiku outlet practically "made in heaven." Certainly, the maximum of 140 digits, punctuation marks and tabs it allows per update does make it look that way. I myself saw the symbiosis early on, and have "updated" (as a blogger I would say "posted") a number of haikus of my own at my Twitter site, which find at: http://twitter.com/MauriYambo.

Tell me what you think: of the site, haikus (generically, mine, others'), Twitter, my (others') tweets, anything really.

Tuonane, eh?
