Tuesday, January 17th, 2023.
It was a case of "more of the same", as the indices continued to slide at the bourse. One key culprit "behind the scenes" is the sliding Kenyan Shilling (KES). And one obvious trend behind all that is that the US$ is "killing it" -- killing KES -- even as hands continue to wring. A number of factors explain the continuing rout. We will not get into them here.
But, amidst all the rout, NSE20 Index continues, so to speak, to outperform within the local market. It closed at the top yet again -- with and despite a -0.33% performance. Yesterday it was at -0.03%. CBshare dropped from second to third (-0.78%), as we see below, with a lower price per share of KES1,834.10 (or US$14.80, at the day's forex rate of KES123.95 per US$).
Here's how the metrix ranked today:
1. NSE 20 Index: -0.33%
2. NSE 25 Index: -0.68%
3. CBshare price (25 counters): -0.78%*
4. NASI (NSE All-Share Index): -1.06%.
KES1,834.10 is the new price (before adding the standard stock-market trading charges that apply) at which a CBshare will now be sold -- until 5:00 PM tomorrow, Wednesday, January 18th 2023.
Unashig's market capitalization contracted (-0.70%) as well, to close at KES6,235,224.50 (or US$50,304.25).
YTD, the price of a CBshare has dipped by 3.31%. Unashig's market capitalization has, in turn, lost 2.82% in value. Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), as a whole and as a distinct entity, has continued to drag, compared with the respective indices.

Monday, January 16th, 2023.
The downward slide, across the board, which we have been witnessing since last Thursday, continued unabated today. Even in that decline, NSE20 Index outperformed the rest by being the least "fallen" (-0.03%). CBshare jumped from fourth last Friday to second (-0.31%), with a price per share of KES1,847.03 (or US$14.91, at the day's forex rate of KES123.90 per US$). Here's how the usual four indices ranked today:
1. NSE 20 Index: -0.03%
2. CBshare price (25 counters): -0.31%*
3. NSE 25 Index: -0.61%
4. NASI (NSE All-Share Index): -1.05%.
Unashig's market capitalization contracted (-0.13%) as well, to close at KES6,279,194.00 (or US$50,679.53).
YTD, the price of a CBshare has dipped by 2.63%. Unashig's market capitalization has, in turn, lost 2.14% in value. Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) has continued to decline, compared with the respective indices. More specifically, it has declined by 29.68% on a YTD basis -- to close at a capitalization level recently stuck at KES1.90 trillion.
SHAREHOLDERS ARE REMINDED THAT While share trading is not Unashig's core business, it is an important aspect of an enterprise such as ours. Unashig is a limited liability company registered under Kenya's Companies Act. It is wholly owned by its registered shareholders, currently numbering 249. Investing the amounts generated through the periodic sale of issued CBshares in dividend/income-generating ventures is a prudent and indeed surer way of growing the company. Surer, certainly, than spending it on routine office activities.
The average number of CBshares held per shareholder remains very low, however. This is not conducive to rapid capital/asset growth, or the generation of substantial and distributable dividend income. For over 12 months, the value of our CBshare has proven that Unashig's investment decisions continue to be competitive with, and quite frequently superior to, those pegged on the trajectory of any, or often all, of the three active NSE indices.
