CSO 302: QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS

SEMESTER: June-October 2016 [Module III Programme]

CAT QUESTIONS [Released: 7.03 p.m., 25^th June 2016]

INSTRUCTION: ANSWER BOTH QUESTIONS.

1.    Which are the three standards of scientific research that you personally consider to be the most important in qualitative research?  Briefly highlight the key aspects of each of the three standards, and clearly justify your preference for them over other standards.

2.    Using your own knowledge of qualitative research, discuss Patton’s (2000) view that the researcher is both the strength and weakness of the qualitative research process. Use clear examples to defend your answer.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: End of the first week upon arrival for the final examination. 

NOTE: 1. Word-processed answers preferred. Limit length of CAT to 6-8 typed, double-spaced, A4 pages                                          only.

            2. Additional marks will be rewarded for answers which display originality of  thought, as well as                                            critical thinking.

              3. There will be severe penalty for plagiarism (‘Xeroxing’ of published or other works).

              4. Marks will be deducted for answers given in “bullet” form. Plagiarized work will get 0/30 marks.

            5. Your answer should clearly demonstrate, through citations, that you have engaged in noteworthy                                          library or online reading.

Void and Set Pieces

There'd be things all around
Us. But, only here,
A vase from far Mongolia.
A void to fill in, with
An ancient scimitar.

Here's the thing, tho:
Celestial spaces
Too neat for all the dirt
We'd be settling.
For all the faded memories we'd have.

To reckon with.

Of where we were:
There'd be a rainbow in the deep
Sky. Too neat for all the answers
We fancied.
Too brightly lit for crayon.

As
Music, here:
Two slim bodies slamming.
Snippets of life as a form
Unto itself. Unto one. Another.

Rain-washed stone tools. Fish mongers.

Three plus three verses
For all the (wanton) things
We ever wanted to do
So too vainly. Be
Not quite enough for a stool.

Here, in our time.
Here in this country.
The only moment.
Of glory. In such
A thing of beauty.

As here's my question, brother!

Why nature favours all sea similes (and stuff):
Ocean.
Desert.
Air.
The endless void into which pour all desires.

GOSPEL: Christina Shusho ~ Nangoja

Shusho here sings "I be waiting". She sings as only angels one has the fortune to hear, I suppose, sing and do. And she's accompanied by a superbly talented boy band, which knows it knows its stuff inside-out, and how to strut it without obtruding.  I don't know who's in it, but this I know: It has put together here for us a wonderfully moving feast for the ear and the loving heart (and lovely) -- with verve and a passion for blended sound and all-around musical play that's at once modest and self-assured, and above all transporting.

Christina is a Gospel icon in these Eastern parts of our great continent. And we're proud of her. And she is, I guess, proud to be among us; to be, as some would say, "Amongest us!" Amen!

May she continue with her craft for ever, like. May she reach farther -- well beyond this Swahili Region. May she reach higher, and carry all and sundry with 'er. Juu! Juu!

May we have the ears to always hear her! And may she always be heard!
